چکیده

A study was performed to determine the biological half-life and plasma concentrations of gentamicin in gopher snakes. The snake plasma was assayed for gentamicin, using a microbiological agar well diffusion technique. In the 1st study, 10 gopher snakes (groups A and B) were each given a single injection of gentamicin. They were anesthetized and samples of blood were collected each day to determine the antibiotic half-life. The average half-life was 82 hours (SD = 31) at an environmental temperature of 24 C. The variations in the results were probably due to metabolic differences within individual snakes. In another study, 11 gopher snakes were treated with serial injections of gentamicin for about 2 weeks. Group C snakes were given gentamicin at a dose level of 2.5 mg/kg of body weight/72 hours, and those in group D were given a dose level of 2.5 mg/kg of body weight/day. Group E snakes were given gentamicin at a dose level of 5.0 mg/kg of body weight/72 hours, and group F snakes were given gentamicin at a dose level of 5.0 mg/kg of body weight/day. The snakes given gentamicin each day reached very high antibiotic concentrations in their plasma. With the long half-life of gen-

Feeding ecology of North American gopher snakes

Studies of food relations are important to our understanding of ecology at the individual, population and community levels. Detailed documentation of the diet of large-bodied, widespread snakes allows us to assess size-dependent and geographical variation in feeding preferences of gape-limited predators. Furthermore, with knowledge of the food habits of sympatric taxa we can explore possible ca...

The mechanics and muscular control of constriction in gopher snakes (Pituophis melanoleucus) and a king snake (Lampropeltis getula)

Constriction of prey by gopher snakes Pituophis melanoleucus and king snakes Lampropeltis getula is highly variable in posture, muscular activity and force exertion. These snakes typically use lateral bends of the anterior trunk to wind the body into a vertical coil around the prey. Three common constriction postures are fully encircling loops that form a coil, partially encircling loops, and n...

The mechanics of swallowing and the muscular control of diverse behaviours in gopher snakes.

Snakes are excellent subjects for studying functional versatility and potential constraints because their movements are constrained to vertebral bending and twisting. In many snakes, swallowing is a kind of inside-out locomotion. During swallowing, vertebral bends push food from the jaws along a substantial length of the body to the stomach. In gopher snakes (Pituophis melanoleucus) and king sn...

Building and maintaining a library Gopher: traditional skills applied to emerging resources.

Gopher software has emerged rapidly as a powerful tool for providing library users with organized access to Internet resources. Building and maintaining Gophers is one way in which librarians' traditional knowledge and skills are being applied in a nontraditional area. In March 1992, the University of Michigan's ULibrary Gopher was created, mainly as a means of providing access to U.S. Census d...

Burrow Use and Survival of Newly Metamorphosed Gopher Frogs (Rana capito)

—The transition from aquatic to terrestrial habitat is thought to be a period of high mortality for amphibians. We used radio telemetry to estimate survival and study factors influencing survivorship of newly metamorphosed Gopher Frogs (Rana capito). Predation was very high and only 12.5% of frogs survived their first month in the terrestrial habitat. All documented predation occurred during th...
